Flower-Visiting Insects
of Cranberry Bush
Viburnum opulus (Cranberry Bush) introduced (in part)
(There are American and European varieties or subspecies of this shrub: Viburnum opulus opulus is the European variety/subspecies, while Viburnum opulus americanum and Viburnum opulus trilobum refer to the American variety/subspecies. Sometimes Cranberry Bush in North America is referred to as a distinct species, Viburnum trilobum. The observations of Krannitz & Maun and Wilhelm & Rericha refer to the European Cranberry Bush with fertile flowers. A popular cultivar of the European Cranberry Bush, 'Snowball', has only infertile flowers with neither nectar nor pollen. In general, bees suck nectar and/or collect pollen, flies and beetles suck nectar and/or feed on pollen, while other insects suck nectar from the flowers; ants also suck nectar from the extrafloral nectaries [sn@exfl] on the petioles of the leaves. Observations are from Krombein et al., Lisberg & Young, Krannitz & Maun, and Wilhelm & Rericha as indicated below.)
